poor poor boopers. she looks terrible and feels awful: a continuous fever since early am thursday, a cough and the runs to boot. she slept well last night, thankfully, but this am when i went to fetch her she didn't have her usual smile for me...just a pained look in her eye and a diaper full of goo.
as it turns out, our daycare center decided to close today because a large percentage of the staff and children are afflicted by the flu. so pete is home again with boopers (thanks honey!). hopefully we don't get hit with the sicky too.
assuming we're all healthy, tomorrow is town meeting day. i've never been to a town meeting before (i know...remarkable considering i've lived in VT almost my entire life!) so i'm very curious to see what it's like and meet some local folks. will post again soon.

sicky
gotta love daycare! yesterday pete was informed that a virus was circulating around the classroom and sure enough, at 12:30 am miss aubrey woke up crying with a raging fever. i was able to get her back to bed without too much commotion, but it took me FOREVER to get back to sleep. so i'm pretty tired today.
and this morning aubrey had a temp of 102, so no daycare. pete is staying with her today so i can put some time in. i hope boopers is able to get some rest. poor little sicky.

snow, multivitamins and a smart cookie
i've been busy lately, hence the infrequent posting. this post is going to be a little random, but hey, this is my blog and i can post whatever i want, right?
snow
so this winter we have been blessed (?) with heaps and heaps of snow. oodles of it. we have so much snow that the plow guy is running out of places to put it! ordinarily i would be thrilled to have such a white fluffy winter, but at the moment, i'm ready to throw in the towel...it can all melt tomorrow, thank you very much! of course, we just received nearly a FOOT of new snow over night, much to my chagrin. no, i'm not bitter about the fact that it is nearly the end of february and i haven't skied once this year and my darling husband is playing hookey to hit the slopes and i have to work. not bitter at all.
multivitamins
we just started giving boopers a liquid multivitamin supplement with fluoride this week. looks pretty nasty, but doesn't taste too bad and she seems to like it. the thing is...i think all of the extra iron she's been getting lately (multivitamins, occasional formula) is, um, stopping her up, so to speak. what shall i do? give her prune juice? not sure...i'll have to ask the doc.
smart cookie!
aubrey is so durned smart! the latest signs of intelligence: we've been working on teaching her to clap her hands for a while now, and over the past few weeks she's started to get it! whenever she claps her hands we inevitably cheer, "yaaaaaay!" imagine my first-time-mother joy when, as i was feeding aubrey dinner last night, aubrey took a big bite of chicken and veggies and i said "yaaaaaay," and she started CLAPPING ON HER OWN! she associated me saying "yaaaay" with clapping! hooray!

week in review
i can't believe it's already thursday...this week has flown by! a quick recap:
we survived the trip to NJ relatively unscathed. no one broke any bones, and pete's parents were simply tickled to see aubrey, their first and only grandchild. the only real stressor of the weekend was that i got very little sleep. this was partly due to aubrey waking at strange hours (i think she is starting to cut more teeth), partly due to the fact that pete's folks keep their house much warmer than ours and i was sweating my tushie off, and partly due to the fact that i was not in my own comfy bed. so by monday i was pretty exhausted.
boopers is doing fab-u-lous! i just love love love that little girl! no major milestones to report, other than that she is getting really good at picking up cheerios and bits of cheese with her cute pudgy little thumbs and forefingers. now she just has to figure out how to get those cheerios into her mouth instead of into cabot's.
work has been zany these days. i've been helping one of the partners prepare for a trial, and i've had a bunch of motions to draft. so i've put in a few long days and logged some good billables, but now i'm kind of burned out and not very motivated (hence the blogging when i should be working). luckily, this weekend some of my favorite gals and i are headed to a local spa for a day of R&R and girltime. i am SO excited...i haven't had a massage in ages and i sure could use one! aaaaaahhhh...saturday cannot come fast enough!

busy week!
crap, i've been getting slammed at work! i've had no trouble making my hours this week, with all of the deadlines i've had to meet! i'm whooped!
so, today was the only day that aubrey was sent to school with a bottle of formula...every other day she's had 100% breastmilk. so far we're doing pretty good on that front, and i am not stressing about it anymore.
we are headed down to new jersey tonight to spend the weekend with pete's folks. not a very relaxing way to cap off a hectic week, but we are long overdue for a visit. hopefully nothing disasterous happens while we're there (like, for instance, one of pete's parents breaking their arm or something. but that's a topic for another post...).

go figure...
maybe giving aubrey that bottle of formula yesterday was just the jump start my mammary glands needed. today i pumped 10 1/2 ounces - up almost two ounces from friday. sweet.
we survived
yesterday i gave aubrey her first bottle of formula. (organic formula of course.) she didn't even so much as blink...sucked that formula right down like she'd been doing it for ages.
so, we made it over that hurdle. whew.

defeated
i'm feeling rather low these days.
i have tried desparately to increase my milk supply, with very little success. despite all of my efforts - which have included getting up in the middle of the night to pump - i am still only pumping 9 oz. of breastmilk during the work day, which is about 5 oz. less than boopers typically drinks during the day at daycare.
i have come to the conclusion that all of the stress that i have been under (moving twice in the span of five months, working full time, having trouble making my hours, pete's travel schedule, and on and on...) has taken its toll on me and my milk supply. so i have decided (blinking back the tears) that it is time to start supplementing with formula.
i know i know...LOTS of women supplement with formula and their babies are healthy and happy. i know it's not the end of the world. but i can't help but feel a bit defeated. i was really hoping to make it a whole year exclusively breastfeeding. i guess making it to 8 months isn't so bad.
i am still going to pump at work...i just plan to cut one pumping session out, so i'll pump twice a day instead of three. (or four. or the occasional five.) and of course, aubrey will still nurse in the morning and at the end of the day.
sigh. giving her that first bottle is going to be tough but i am hopeful that we will all survive and be just fine in the end.

why "boopers"?
so where did the nickname "boopers" come from, you ask? (well, nobody's asked, but for whatever reason i feel compelled to explain since after reading older posts i thought i sounded a bit wack-o referring to my child as one name and then another intermittently.)
well, when pete and i found out we were havin' us a baby, we decided that we didn't want to find out the baby's gender until birth day. after much toiling, we settled upon a name we liked for a girl (aubrey) and a name we liked for a boy (cooper...actually, pete really liked this name and i tolerated it. we couldn't agree on any other names).
completely by happenstance we started referring to the unborn baby as "aubooper." then, when aubrey was born, we started calling her "boopers." the only logical explanation i can come up with for this absurd nickname is that it is a holdover from the aubooper name.
so there you have it.

work on saturday
well, i'm in the office, trying to bill a few hours since i was WAY under my target last month. i was kind of dreading coming in but actually, it's nice and quiet here.
anyhoo, not too much to write about at the moment. aubrey has sprouted two little bitty teeth on her bottom gum and has been a bit of a pill for the past few days. (i.e., napping strikes and not sleeping well at night.) she also promptly caught a cold the very DAY she returned to daycare, so we are battling with the boogers.
milk production hasn't really increased significantly...maybe by an extra ounce. (i'm pumping almost 10 oz. during the day instead of ~ 9 oz.) this in spite of the fact that i've tried: (a) pumping more frequently; (b) drinking huge quantities of water; and (c) taking fennugreek and blessed thistle supplements 3 x a day for the past week. maybe i just need to relaaaaaax a little more. now that pete is back, maybe i'll see a slight increase. we'll see. i've been pumping around 1:00 am most mornings and that has enabled me to stay slightly ahead of aubrey's consumption. and she hasn't been drinking quite as much milk as she was over the past few weeks, so maybe we've hit something of an equilibrium....for the moment.
alright, back to billing. oh! before i forget: i am almost finished with aubrey's new sweater! i made it from balls of scrap yarn left over from other projects and it is super cute! i just have to finish the second sleeve (maybe today), weave in the ends and block it. it looks like it will fit her perfectly. i'll post pictures soon!
