not sure how the conversation came up, but last night i asked pete what his top three favorite foods of all time were. his reply:
bacon
donuts
beer
i aptly pointed out that beer is a beverage, not a food. his response was something to the effect of, "well, it's close enough."
and my three favorite foods? hmmmm. for the moment, they are:
ice cream
homemade chocolate chip cookies
grilled cheese sandwiches. with good bread and really sharp cheddar cheese.
on a not-so-random note, last night we planted the first round of seeds for the garden: morning glorys, sweet peppers and broccoli. tonite we tackle the zucchini, cukes, chard, and basil. i'm hoping to get all of the seeds started within the next few days. baby steps....

happy weekend
ignoring the fact that it is sunday morning and i am at the office, it has been a lovely weekend. if only it could be longer! a recap:
we have had an unusually long stretch of sunny, warm weather up in these parts. on the plus side, all of the snow has melted away, the leaves are starting to unfurl, and daffodils are in bloom. spring is finally here. on the down side, it is very DRY due to lack of precipitation. i think we are in for a rainy week though. so that should help things out.
anyhoo, we've really been enjoying the warmth and the sun, after such a long snowy winter. yesterday we got some yard work done...raking, pruning, general cleaning up. we brought aubrey out with us while we raked and she happily bounced around in her exersaucer and watched the people and cars go by. we've found all sorts of random garbage in the yard leftover from the previous owners, and took several trips to the dump this weekend to haul it away. we also picked up our handy-dandy composter, so we can get that up and running shortly.
speaking of aubrey, she is making huge progress towards mobility. she can now: go from her tummy to a sitting position and vice versa, and "crawl" backwards. she hasn't figured out the forward thing yet...if she wants to go forward, she kind of scootches and rolls. and she loves to pull up on things and thinks it is so cool to stand while we hold her hands. no steps yet, but she is definitely getting strong. time to baby proof the living room!

happy earth day...spring is finally here!
actually, it's felt more summerish than springish for the past week, with temperatures soaring to almost 80 degrees and bright sunshine everyday. our snow is almost completely gone, and we are enjoying poking around the yard and checking out the mystery sprouts that are pushing up through the soil. i'm lovin' it.
i haven't been posting much lately because work has been busy and we've been outside enjoying the nice weather as much as possible. plus although we FINALLY have our new camera (it's awesome!) i haven't had a chance to download pictures and post any. i guess that's really no excuse but, hey. what can i say?
boopers is growing and changing like crazy. she wasn't feeling that great toward the end of last week, but she's back on track and working really hard at crawling and moving. she is a little mimic now...repeating sounds that we make, faces that we make, and even hand movements. it is clear that she is starting to recognize some words, too (aside from "baby" and "pup-pup"). all i can say is...wow. it is so COOL to watch this little baby discover her world.
we are starting to plan out our garden and clean up the yard now that the snow is pretty much gone. we bought two apple trees to plant in the back yard, which should be arriving any day now. there's lots of pruning and raking to do...and we've discovered a whole host of "antique" machinery lying around the property. anyone out there intersted in a slightly rusty, "vintage" seed planter?
anyhoo, back to the garden. i think i mentioned that our garden plot has a bunch of perennials in it (why anyone would plant hostas in a veggie garden is beyond me, but they will be transplanted in the fall, yes they will) so space is a bit limited this year, but i am scheming about starting a secondary herb/salad green plot in the side yard, where we have lots of southern exposure. this week we are starting some seeds indoors, including:
decicco broccoli (yum)
rainbow chard
zucchini
pickling cukes
basil
cilantro
sweet peppers
we are also going to grow salad greens, cutting flowers, and of course, tomatoes. we usually get tomato seedlings from pete's pop, who is a master tomato grower. i'd really love to grow winter squash, beans (we may grow some if there's room), beets, fennel, and potatoes, but i think for this first year we're going to start out small. there's lots of perennial planting and managing to do in addition to getting our veggie garden up and sprouting, so i think we'll have enough to keep us well fed and busy for the summer.

the queen of carbs
hi hi...sorry for the lack of posting. busy times, busy times. a quick update on miss a:
1. the kid loves bread. loves it. no wheat allergies, obviously. this weekend i took her grocery shopping and gave her a big chunk of bagel to gnaw on and she was happy as a clam...and covered with starchy goo.
2. she also loves CHEESE. really sharp VT cheddar. she stealthily searches for and destroys every last itty bitty cube of it on her tray...before eating her veggies. i think she would eat cheese at every meal, if we served it to her.
3. and eggs. allergies be damned, i served her scrambled eggs - with the whites - this weekend and she was in breakfast heaven!
what else? aubrey has said "pup-pup" a few more times, and we are currently working on saying "baby," since she loves looking at the picture of the baby on her diaper package. and she is growing closer and closer to mobility. not exactly crawling yet, but sort of scootching. and she is starting to pull herself up, too. gotta start keeping a close eye on her now!
i'll post pictures soon...when i get a moment.

hookey
yesterday was a beautiful SPRING day. finally! sunny and mild...simply spectacular. pete and i decided to take advantage of the beautious weather and skip work to go skiing. (after we brought boopers to daycare of course.)
we had a blast. considering it was my first time on downhill skis in almost two seasons i did quite well. although by mid-afternoon my legs were pooped...spring skiing is great, but pushing your skis through heavy snowy gloop is challenging! and today i'm a bit sore. but so worth it. pete is a great skiing buddy and we haven't had a day to ourselves in such a long time!
aubrey's ear infection seems to have resovled itself, thankfully. she has really discovered how to feed herself this week...sometimes the food doesn't quite make it to the mouth, but she's making excellent progress. in fact, she'd much prefer to feed herself, thank you very much mummy but i don't want you to do it! she is also waiving "hello" and "bye-bye" now. it's amazing how fast she changes!

she speaks!
no, this is not an april fool's joke...it's true! last night, aubrey uttered her first official words: "pup-pup." this is what we call cabot, whom aubrey is fascinated with. (sadly, cabot could care less about aubrey, unless she has food on her hands and face.) it was so SWEET! cabot walked by her and she noticed him so i said, "hi, pup-pup!" she looked at me and said, "puh....puh....pup-pup." and then grinned and giggled. hooray for boopers!
also, she seems to be doing much better this morning. and last night she was up a few times, but not fussy, so she put herself back to sleep. i think today will be a much better day.
